Proverbs 18:21 says
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof”
I am not sure if people really understand the power the words they speak out of their mouths have on their own lives and the lives of others. Growing up, I was a very active little girl whether it was piano, dance, ______ (you name it, I did it). The activity that I grew to love at a very young age was dance. I wanted to be a prima ballerina, a mesmerizing modern jazz dancer, and Gregory Hines’ tap dance kid. My mother being the supporter and encourager that she is, allowed me to join a dance company. It was tons of fun — I would spend 3-5 days a week in class and rehearsals and many weekends during the year competing around the country. Although these were some of the best times in my young life, being a competitive dancer came with a price for me. You see, I was never the thinnest girl in my dance class even though when I look back at it now I was pretty small. But I would always have to hear things like — you need to watch your weight, and you looked like you gained a few pounds its time to go a diet so you can look great in your costume. And then I entered the pageant world at the age of 14 and I was still far from the conventional Beauty Queen — I was short, thick, and hella talented
It never stopped me from striving to the best I could be and in 1995 I pushed through the stereotypes and became Miss Teen Maryland 1995.
Through childhood, young adulthood, and even now, my weight has been constantly scruntized and I know that I have been and continue to be traumatized by always being under the microscope. Even at 130lbs I was too fat and now that I am much heavier I feel that no matter how big or small I get, it will always be a FAT GIRL.
I am telling this story today to tell all my Divas out there to watch your words — be careful what you tell your friends, family members, and people that you come across throughout your day – even what seem to be the funniest jokes can have the most detrimental effects. We also have to watch the words we speak to ourselves. Again, there is life and death in the power of the tongue. I CANwill carry you alot further than I CAN’T.
Today, we are speaking life! I am speaking life to getting rid of this muffin top and being the best healthy, happy Diva I CAN be. Speak it and you CAN achieve it.
